Resources For Parents

Most families find the financial aid process mystifying and overwhelming and, unfortunately, many rely on inaccurate information from well-meaning friends or acquaintances. Parents need to know that this whole process is manageable and that it all begins with the FAFSA form

Is my student Dependent or independent

The FAFSA form was designed to provide a picture of the family's financial strength (as defined by the law). If a dependent student is applying for federal student aid to help pay for college, the parent's financial information is required on the FAFSA form. Providing information does not commit the parent to financially contributing to the student's education; it is simply required for the assessment of the family's situation.

Dependency Info

What info wilL I have to provide?

Firstly, Providing information does not commit the parent to financially contributing to the student's education; it is simply required for the assessment of the family's situation to determine the amount of aid the student qualifies for. The student's income and assets are weighed more heavily than those of the parents in the assessment of the student's eligibility for federal student aid.

Parents must include tax, income, and some asset information on the FAFSA form.

How to Report Parent Info

how much aid will my child/guardian receive?

Typically, high school seniors submit the FAFSA® form. For many students, this is their first exposure to the financial aid process. At the time they’re submitting, many students are making final choices about their options for college or career school without the financial aid information they need.

The Federal Student Aid Estimator provides an early estimate of what the student’s federal student aid could be by using some initial data that the student provides. This can help the student make decisions about college or career school.

What is a parent plus loan?

A Direct PLUS Loan commonly referred to as a parent PLUS loan, is a federal loan that parents of a dependent undergraduate student uses to help pay for education expenses.
